Adapting to global climate change and responding to the growing need for energy sources and clean drinking water are challenges that modern society faces today and during decades to come. Today’s generation of students will have to deal with these challenges and I believe that it is essential to provide students with the awareness, skills and knowledge to respond. In my teaching I therefore link content (e.g. the knowledge about acid base chemistry) and skills (e.g. working with real data) with discussions about environmental concerns (e.g. acid rain).

Four cornerstones of my teaching:
1) Universal Design for Learning: I am convinced that every student can be an effective learner if I use multiple ways of teaching that is adapted to varied student learning styles.
2) Goal-based, student-centered teaching: For each of my courses I formulate overarching student centered learning goals that guide content, teaching approach and type of learning assessment for the course as well as for each class meeting times.
3) Hands on teaching: My courses generate and use real data (GEOL 135 and 235) that we use to practice quantitative skills. Most of my courses are writing intensive (GEOL 095, GEOL 110 and GEOL 371).
4) Student feedback: I use anonymous surveys where feedback on course framework (workload, pace, teaching style, content) and student experience help me to better adapt the course for optimal student learning.
