This GUND and CZNet funded project is based on community input to develop and implement community based, culturally relevant STEM teacher education in the context of the water crisis in Jackson, MS. Collaborators in education, social justice, and computer sciences from Jackson State University (JSU) and the CZNet Big Data team build on existing relationships to foster an equitable exchange between institutions, challenge structures of racism, and center Black perspectives. Our approach include a concept for culturally relevant teacher education in the context of the Jackson water crises, listening sessions with community leaders, teachers, and experts in Jackson MS for feedback, the design culturally relevant STEM teacher education programming based on this feedback, and the implementation in relevant school districts in Jackson, MS.
