Commitment to Equity, Diversity and Belonging
I am strongly committed to support BIPOC, LGBTQ, first-generation and neurodivergent students, as well as building diversity competency for all students. I try to help students build awareness on how bias plays out within the sciences, developing strategy and skills for navigating a career in the sciences, and building opportunities for students to contribute to a research and education community that celebrates diversity. I offer some context on my own experience and learning here.
Especially the lack of racial diversity in Earth science limits scientific progress by excluding creative ideas and perspectives, yet, current and aspiring Black geoscientists face barriers of inequity and exclusion. As a group we have not solved anything, but we have resources that we use to try and do better every day. Here are some of them:

For neurodivergence I found this book very helpful, it is written by a neurodivergent researcher and is refreshingly void of typical deficit language:
